Artemisia (Artemisia annua)

Botanical Name: Artemisia annua

Common Names: Sweet Wormwood, Sweet Annie

We use the botanical name Artemisia annua to avoid confusion, as “wormwood” is a common name shared by several very different Artemisia species.

This Artemisia is grown, harvested, and prepared on our Vermont farm, using the fresh, whole plant to preserve its bitterness, aromatic oils, and full plant chemistry.

Artemisia annua has a long history of traditional use as a strong bitter and antiparasitic herb. Herbalists have traditionally used it to support the body during parasite cleansing protocols, digestive imbalance, and conditions where the system feels burdened, sluggish, or overwhelmed.

Traditionally, Artemisia annua has been used to:

  • Discourage intestinal parasites and unwanted organisms
  • Support digestive and intestinal cleansing
  • Create an internal environment unfavorable to microbial overgrowth
  • Support the body during chronic or lingering infections
  • Help restore vitality when the system is taxed or depleted

Its pronounced bitterness stimulates digestive secretions and elimination pathways, helping the body release what no longer belongs.

Traditional Use Notes

In traditional Western and folk herbalism, Artemisia annua was not used as a daily tonic. It was worked with as a short-term, intentional herb, most often during parasite protocols, cleansing phases, or when stronger intervention was needed.

Herbalists respected its intensity and used it deliberately for limited periods, often alongside supportive herbs for digestion, liver function, and mineral balance. This plant was chosen when gentler herbs were not enough—and set aside once its work was complete.

Cautionary Use

Artemisia annua is a potent, active herb and is best used short-term, not continuously. It is not traditionally used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Those with chronic conditions, sensitivities, or under medical care should consult a qualified healthcare professional before use. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur.

Suggested Use:

May be taken with water or juice to soften the bitter taste. For those sensitive to flavor, it may also be applied externally to the bottoms of the feet.
