Botanical Herbs: Bayberry

Botanical name: Myrica cerifera

Bayberry is a powerful, warming, and strongly astringent herb traditionally used to tone and tighten tissues throughout the body. It has long been valued in herbal practice for supporting areas where there is excess, laxity, or unwanted tissue buildup, particularly within the digestive tract and mucosal systems.

Bayberry is made from the root bark of the plant, not the leaf. Root-based herbs are naturally more concentrated and require more labor to harvest, making them some of the most valued and respected preparations in traditional herbalism.

Herbalists have traditionally used Bayberry to support:

• healthy gum tissue, especially when spongy or prone to bleeding

• digestive tone and sluggish digestion

• excess mucus and boggy tissue states

• the body’s natural response to polyps and abnormal tissue growth

• overall tissue tightening and structural support

This is a strong, active herb — not a gentle daily tonic. Bayberry works by firming and restoring tone where the body has become weak, over-relaxed, or excessive in growth.

Traditionally, Bayberry has also been used for oral care and gum support. It is included in our tooth powder and our herbal mouthwash, and is often used as a rinse when additional support for the gums and oral tissues is needed.

Traditionally respected for helping bring tissues back into balance, especially where there is loss of tone or structural integrity.
